This abandoned loft in Tribeca needed a complete rescue and renovation. Its 4,000 sq. ft. had the potential to capture natural light in all places. During the course of the project, I partnered with James Mohn, a resident of the home to develop the design of the space. Together we had carte blanche to carve out this luxe project within a cavernous demolished space abandoned by its previous owner.

“For a house to be successful, the objects in it must communicate with one another, respond to and balance one another”.  - Andrée Putman

The main goal of the project was to honor the light. We blocked non-windowed spaces in the center of the home, utilizing existing skylights and creating light troughs in bedrooms. Those troughs were multi-purpose, as they satisfied the city’s requirements to establish the non-windowed space as a “bedroom.”

Drawing inspiration from designer Andrée Putman, we utilized a refined mix of materials in an open space so every element speaks to one another. The materials and the light which honors them are equally balanced and considered, creating a wholly integrated space.

It was a true collaboration–the client, a talented designer, showed spark and passion. We worked so well together and his attention to detail was inspiring. I encouraged him to pursue his license as Architect. This project ultimately launched his design career.

A blank slate is a natural challenge. Recognizing the power of teams, utilizing each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Finding inspiration in new roles and responsibilities. Growing Pains.
